Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is prepared to build several Titan-sized superclusters to expand its AI infrastructure. He reported that one of the upcoming clusters will have a footprint equivalent to that of Manhattan.

Meta to Allocate ‘Hundreds of Billions’ to Grow AI Infrastructure

As its rivals ramp up spending in the artificial intelligence (AI) field, Meta will also allocate a significant part of its resources to data centers to grow its AI business. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced investments of hundreds of billions of dollars into the construction of AI superclusters designed to accelerate the development of autonomous intelligent systems.

In a post, Zuckerberg highlighted that the company already had the capital to do this and pointed out that Meta was focused on “building the most elite and talent-dense team in the industry.” Reports indicate that Meta offered hundreds of millions of dollars in wages and bonuses to poach AI employees from rival companies like Openai, Anthropic, and Google.

Zuckerberg declared that the company was currently building several Titan-sized clusters, with capacities that range from 1 GW to 5 GW. Prometheus, slated to be the first 1GW supercluster built by any company, is expected to start operations next year. Hyperion, another of these massive compute centers, will be able to scale to 5 GW capacity over several years.

He concluded:

Meta Superintelligence Labs will have industry-leading levels of compute and by far the greatest compute per researcher. I’m looking forward to working with the top researchers to advance the frontier!

Meta’s pivot to AI is part of a collective movement of all tech to the artificial intelligence industry, as each company races to introduce AI elements in its products and services to avoid being left behind by others. In January, Microsoft revealed plans to allocate $80 billion towards AI-enabled data centers during fiscal year 2025.

Meta might monetize its AI push by selling their models and compute power to other companies, and also enabling third parties to leverage their capabilities across Meta’s suite of products, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
