Cheng Ran's cross-border collaboration "Self-Miracle #555" has generated $144,000, exploring new realms of generative art.
The artwork reappeared at the auction venue, exploring the liquidity of time, and "Self-Miracle #555" was sold at a high price.
The contemporary Chinese video and cross-media artist Cheng Ran has collaborated with application scientist and artist Sun Bo Han to create "Miracle #555," which recently sold for $144,000 at a digital art auction. This piece is part of the "Miracle" series, which is inspired by Cheng Ran's 2015 nine-hour film "Finding Miracle."
The "Miracle" series made its debut at the "Lunar Water" exhibition in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2024. The creation of this series is based on Cheng Ran's experimental film imagery, exploring the application of algorithms and generative coding techniques through collaboration with Sun Bohan. They deconstructed and regenerated the temporal elements of the film, reducing images to their simplest forms, patterns, and color fields, breaking traditional temporal boundaries, allowing each frame to be rearranged and regenerated, constructing a brand new temporal landscape.
Cheng Ran, born in 1981 in China, is an artist focused on new media, whose works mainly include video and film. His works often revolve around unresolved issues in life, such as themes of identity and death. Cheng Ran has received multiple "Best Video Artist" awards, and his works have been exhibited in several internationally renowned art institutions.
Sun Bohan, born in 1992, is an applied science artist and curator. He is dedicated to promoting the exchange and cooperation of art, technology, and culture between the East and West, focusing on the integration of technology, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and art. Sun Bohan has curated several important exhibitions, including the world's first large-scale offline crypto art exhibition and China's first large-scale generative art exhibition.
It is worth mentioning that another work by Sun Bohan, Neural Drift, was also sold at the same auction for $13,200. This is an interactive NFT artwork that combines the dynamic effects of neural networks with internet culture, adjusting its visual display in real-time by receiving the staking of specific tokens, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the cryptocurrency market and its cultural influence.
The successful auction of "The Miracle #555" not only showcases the status of generative art in the contemporary art market but also reflects artists' exploration of the integration of new technologies with traditional art forms. This cross-disciplinary collaboration opens up new possibilities for artistic creation, allowing audiences to experience the intertwining of time, memory, and technology in entirely new ways.
